Characters

Kiyosumi High School

Senpo: Yuuki Kataoka

Voice Actor: Rie Kugimiya
A first-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, she plays Senpo in the team tournament.
She absolutely loves tacos, and gets energized by eating anything
with "tako" (octopus) in its name.
In mahjong, she runs out of steam in the second half (South round).

Ability: Likely to become the starting dealer (chiicha)
More likely to draw useful tiles in the East round

Initial Stats Ability ★★★
Spirit ★★★
Tsumo ★★★
Haipai ★★★
Luck ★★★
Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Sanshoku
Ability-Based Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Sanshoku
Ability Activation Timing At the start of a round
Continues across rounds after activation

Mechanics

The ability is guaranteed to last up to 3 rounds.
Each win extends the ability by one round (if you don't win, the effect ends even in the East round).
With Spirit at MAX, it can continue for up to about 16 rounds.
The ability is forcibly cut off once the South round begins.
While the ability is active, the base Tsumo and Haipai values have no effect.

Even if it gets broken by intimidation when activating in East 1, there is another chance to activate in the next round.

While the ability is active, the rate of drawing useful tiles rises dramatically, so once you reach tenpai, even kanchan, penchan, and tanki waits have a very high rate of riichi-ippatsu-tsumo.

The number of stacked tiles in the haipai changes with the Ability value; the Tsumo rate and starting-dealer rate show no particular change.
At most, 3 shuntsu (9 tiles) are stacked.
The stacking pattern very often splits into two cases: three chanta-type shuntsu (123, 789) or three tanyao-type shuntsu (2-8) (there are exceptions).
And many are likely to be stacked in iipeikou or sanshoku shapes.
Examples of chanta stacking: 112233-789, 123-123-789, 789-789-789, etc.

With no points allocated, haipai is often 4-5 shanten, but the high rate of drawing useful tiles makes tenpai speed very fast.

The seat probabilities (East to North) in East 1 are roughly as follows:
East (starting dealer): approx. 50%
South: approx. 25%
West: approx. 15%
North: approx. 10%

Jiho: Mako Someya

Voice Actor: Ryoko Shiraishi
A second-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, she plays Jiho in the team tournament.
At her family's cafe, many customers play mahjong, and she has stored up
a vast number of those match scenes as mental images.
When she takes off her glasses, it is the sign that she is serious.

Ability: After a certain number of honba have passed, she can sense dangerous tiles

Initial Stats Ability ★★★

Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Sanshoku Doujun, Sanankou, Sangenpai
Ability Activation Timing At the start of a round (activated at will)

Mechanics

The ability can be activated from the 3rd round.
When the ability is activated, toitsu of honor tiles are stacked into the haipai and souzu tiles become more numerous.

Spirit MAX
Can be activated up to about 28 times

Basic stacking patterns
(1) 2 honor-tile toitsu + 3 souzu + random
(2) 1 honor-tile kantsu + 3 souzu + random
(3) 3 honor-tile toitsu + 3 souzu + random
(4) 9 souzu + random
The probability of each occurring decreases from top to bottom.

The number of stacked souzu increases as the Ability value rises.
At MAX: (1) and (2) have 5-7, (3) has 5, (4) has 10-11?

Chuken: Hisa Takei

Voice Actor: Shizuka Ito
A third-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club.
She plays Chuken in the team tournament.
A talented young woman who is both the mahjong club president and the student council president.
In mahjong, she prefers a playing style that deliberately ignores theory,
bewildering opponents with tactics ordinary people can't understand and bad waits.

Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Ittsuu, Sanankou

Mechanics

The number of remaining winning tiles at which the ability can activate depends on how far the Ability has been trained.
  • Under ★5: 3 tiles or fewer
  • ★5 or above: 4 tiles or fewer
  • MAX: 5 tiles or fewer

Strategy

Other characters whose draws get stronger once they reach tenpai are Touka Ryuumonbuchi and Kurumi Shikakura, but
she differs from Touka in having no han restriction and in being able to activate the ability even after calling,
and differs from Kurumi in being able to activate the ability even after declaring riichi.
Compared with these characters, her strength is being free to choose between playing menzen or calling, so
you'll want to adapt flexibly to your hand.

Fukusho: Nodoka Haramura

Voice Actor: Ami Koshimizu
She plays Fukusho for the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club.
A player to watch, with a record of winning the individual title at the Inter-Middle.
Also competing in this tournament, Shizuno Takakamo of the Achiga Girls' Academy Mahjong Club and
Ako Atarashi and the others are her childhood friends, who
attended the same mahjong class when they were young.

Taisho: Saki Miyanaga

Voice Actor: Kana Ueda
A first-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, she plays Taisho in the team tournament.
Normally a quiet girl who loves reading, but once she picks up mahjong tiles,
she overwhelms the others with her specialty, rinshan kaihou,
revealing a bold side of her personality.
To be reunited with her older sister, the top player in high school mahjong,
she aims to win the Inter-High with her teammates.

Haipai Adjustment Kantsu, Koutsu, Toitsu
Ability Activation Timing When declaring kan

Mechanics

At haipai, a [kantsu or koutsu or toitsu] of [1, 2, 8, 9 number tiles or wind tiles] is stacked.
If a toitsu or koutsu was stacked, declaring kan lets you draw that tile.
Training Haipai makes stacking reliable, with the breakdown as follows:
  • Untrained: 1 kantsu
  • ★5 or above: 1 kantsu, 1 toitsu
  • ★7.5 or above: 1 kantsu, 1 koutsu
  • MAX: 2 kantsu
It's not that points are wasted unless you allocate exactly to these thresholds;
the probability of the higher-tier stacking occurring rises gradually with points.
Also, occasionally 1 kantsu and 2 koutsu are stacked.

If you declare kan in a situation that doesn't match the above,
you can draw a tile you have already ponned, in addition to useful tiles. (You can't draw it if another player holds it.)

Strategy

Declaring kan while holding outer tiles tends to produce poor-shape waits, so
ideally declare kan while holding only 3-7 number tiles and honor tiles.
Also, getting beaten to a win by another player after declaring kan hurts, so be careful with your kan timing.

If possible, you want to train Haipai to MAX.
By declaring kan on the 2 kantsu and drawing useful tiles, at least 1 taatsu is formed,
so you can start from at least 3-shanten, and usually from 2-shanten or better.
Also, by declaring kan on the number-tile kantsu before the wind-tile kantsu,
you can avoid the rinshan tile attaching to the number-tile kantsu and being wasted, so keep this in mind.

Depending on the haipai, tanyao, chanta-type hands, and flushes are all hard to aim for, and it is hard to raise the value of your hand.
You can aim for sanankou, sankantsu, and sometimes suuankou, but it is also hard to keep gathering koutsu.
Therefore your firepower mainly depends on kan dora and kan ura dora,
so you want to raise the Luck stat to make dora more likely to land on your hand.
If you want a quick win, call tiles and go for toitoi.

Allocating points to Ability doesn't change which tiles you can draw, so there's probably no need to.

Himematsu High School

Senpo: Man Uwashige

Voice Actor: Jurisa Date
A second-year member of the Himematsu High School Mahjong Club.
She plays Senpo in the team tournament.
Her win rate under the standard rules at school is not very good,
but when she wins, she racks up explosive scores—a high-firepower player.
Her family runs an okonomiyaki restaurant.

One of the players to watch, boasting top-level skill nationwide.
Her mother, Masae Atago, is a famous player who was active as a pro
and is the coach of the Senriyama Girls' High School Mahjong Club.

Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Sanshoku, Sanankou
Ability Activation Timing When another player's discard locks in their tenpai

Mechanics

With no points allocated to Spirit (★4):
Can be activated about 15 times

Depending on the Ability value, you can tell with some probability each hand whether a dangerous tile is a low-value one (orange) or a high-value one (red).
At Ability MAX, you can always tell.
Even with no points allocated you can mostly tell, but occasionally a cheap hand is shown in red.
A high-value tile is never shown in orange, so the only downside is that you can no longer feed tiles on purpose (sashikomi).

Strategy

There is no problem at all leaving Ability and Spirit with no points allocated.
Atago-neki's strength is being able to declare riichi without fear.
Toyone's Senbu and Sumire's Sharp Shoot also have no effect on her,
so as long as her ability isn't broken, you will never lose points except through tsumo erosion.

Haipai, Tsumo, and Luck at MAX are a given.
For the rest, being tsumo'd by an opponent is the scariest thing, and you'll want to shut down tsumo characters when their abilities activate, so Intimidation MAX is recommended.
Put all leftover points into Resistance.

Fukusho: Kinue Atago

Voice Actor: Mariko Nakatsu
A second-year member of the mahjong club.
She plays Fukusho.
She was on the soccer team in middle school, but she began playing mahjong
out of admiration for her older sister Hirone.
She is cousins with Hiroko Funakubo, the Fukusho of the Senriyama Girls' High School Mahjong Club.

Eisui Girls' High School

Senpo: Komaki Jindai

Voice Actor: Saori Hayami
A second-year member of the Eisui Girls' High School Mahjong Club, she plays Senpo in the team tournament.
She commands the shrine maidens known as the Rokujosen (Six Maidens), and usually dozes off a lot
with a gentle personality, but in mahjong she is a powerhouse who showed off
her ability at last year's Inter-High.

Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou
Ability Activation Timing At the start of a round
Continues across rounds after activation

Mechanics

The ability activates from the 3rd round.
If you train Ability to MAX, it activates from the 2nd round.

Details of the Ability

When the ability activates, one of the following 5 courses is selected.
(1) Haipai Adjustment Course
Sanshoku
1-2 Kantsu
Koutsu of East and South
Ittsuu
Sanankou
The shape 111234567 (any suit)

(2) Tanyao Tsumo Adjustment Course
(3) Chiitoitsu Tsumo Adjustment Course
(4) Honor Tile Tsumo Adjustment Course
(5) Chinitsu Tsumo Adjustment Course

(3) may overlap with other courses?
(5) persists even after the ability expires.
There is no switching between courses during a match.

Tsumo adjustments are nullified by abilities that make you draw unneeded tiles (such as Sae's or Toyone's Butsumetsu).
Haipai adjustments are nullified by abilities that control the haipai (such as Kasumi's or Awai's).

The haipai for courses (2)-(5) is bad, but raising the Haipai value brings in the base haipai adjustment (iipeikou, etc.).

Strategy

If you allocate points to Haipai, the base haipai adjustment kicks in and makes it hard to tell which course you got into, so leaving it unallocated is recommended.
Judge whether it is course (1) or (2)-(5) by whether the initial haipai is junk or has a haipai adjustment.
She is weak to abilities that force unneeded tiles, so Intimidation MAX is recommended.
As long as Ability, Spirit, and Intimidation are at MAX and Haipai is unallocated, the rest is up to you.
Once you enter a tsumo course the Tsumo value also becomes meaningless, which is a dilemma.

Below is an introduction to how to play each course.

About course (1)
If you get koutsu of East and South, your tsumo draws will gather West and North, so you can aim for suushiihou.
They may also be sleeping in the dead wall, so kan East and South whenever possible.

If you get 111234567, your tsumo draws will gather 8 and 9, so you can aim for chuuren poutou.
However, these two are hard to win until the late game, so be careful.

As for kantsu, the dora occasionally stacks three times for a dora yakuman, but it is not guaranteed, so refrain from kanning recklessly.

About course (2)
You will always draw tanyao tiles, so discard terminals and honor tiles first.
Tanyao comes along as a matter of course, so calling for a quick win is also an option.
With good luck, suuankou may even be possible?

About course (3)
Junk. The weakest god. If you get this, give up gracefully.
To tell it apart from course (2), check whether you draw terminals and honor tiles.
To tell it apart from course (4), check how often you draw honor tiles.

About course (4)
Note that you do not draw an honor tile every time; also, your own haipai has only 3-4 honor tiles, while the other players' haipai have a normal amount.
From around the midgame you start drawing honor tiles one after another.
If you make it to the late game you can aim for tsuuiisou, so call any honor tile you can early on, even non-yakuhai winds.
However, it is a bit too slow to aim for tsuuiisou, so winning with yakuhai or honitsu is probably the wise choice.
Occasionally you can aim for kokushi musou as well.

About course (5)
The strongest.
You keep drawing one suit until it runs dry, so you can reach tenpai on a menzen chinitsu by turn 10 at the latest.
If you draw a different suit, it is a sign that suit has already run dry.
An open chinitsu or open honitsu can be won quite quickly.
If you try, you can even make chinitsu suuankou, chuuren poutou, chinitsu chiitoitsu, and so on.
Note that only this course keeps its effect even after the ability expires.

When the ability activates, you can ippatsu tsumo with very high probability.
The han count at which the ability can activate depends on how far the Ability has been trained.
  • Under ★5: 2 han or more
  • ★5 or above: 1 han or more
  • MAX: No restriction
Dora and double riichi count toward the han total.
The ura dora is determined at riichi, and this also counts toward the han total.

* Whether a yaku must already be fixed at the time of riichi needs verification.
There are three cases: where a yaku is already fixed at riichi,
where a yaku is added if you win (such as a yakuhai shanpon or a single-type wait on a dora tile),
and where a yaku is added if you win on the higher-value wait (such as a takame sanshoku, takame iipeikou, or takame sanankou).
The ability definitely activates in the first case, but the latter two are a bit doubtful.

Strategy

If no winning tiles remain in the wall, you can't tsumo even with the ability activated,
so tenpai speed should be your first priority above all.

To reach tenpai quickly, you'll want to train Haipai to MAX.
Usually one of pinfu, tanyao, yakuhai, or dora comes with the hand at tenpai,
so whether to train Ability to MAX is up to your preference.

Haipai Adjustment The pinzu waits above
Ability Activation Timing When a discard locks in tenpai

Mechanics

With a certain probability, stacking occurs that sets up one of the pinzu waits above.
Once stacking occurs, it is stacked every hand until the end.

At Ability MAX, stacking is guaranteed to occur from the first round.
The rate at which the first stacking occurs changes with the Ability value.
Regardless of the Ability and Haipai values, the stacking produces the shapes with the pinzu waits above.

Strategy

Ability and Haipai are not that important, so leaving them unallocated is fine, but if the stacking doesn't happen it's just ordinary mahjong, so it's good to put some points into Ability.
Focus your allocation on Intimidation, Resistance, Tsumo, and Luck.
Spirit holds up well enough at around ★3-5, so adjust it if you find yourself getting worn out in matches.

* If the pinzu come together first and you end up on a manzu or souzu wait
When you tsumo, you can declare a furiten riichi on the pinzu wait to add riichi and ippatsu after the fact, so you can raise the hand by 2 han.
If the tile comes from another player, it is less risky to just ron it as it is, so decide based on the situation.

Mechanics

To activate the ability consecutively, you need to win with a score equal to or higher than the previous win.

If you win with a kazoe yakuman, haipai and tsumo adjustments for various yakuman kick in from the next round.
Leave completing every yakuman other than suukantsu entirely to her.

Below are the yakuman adjustments that have been confirmed:
Kokushi Musou
Chinroutou
Tsuuiisou
Suuankou
Suushiihou
Ryuuiisou
Daisangen
Chuuren Poutou

Strategy

For the first time, make winning your top priority regardless of the score.
The Ability value changes the haipai adjustment, the number of unneeded tiles in the haipai, the tsumo rate of useful tiles, and so on.
It is not a problem if you don't allocate anything, but ideally go in with it at MAX.
As for Spirit, leaving it unallocated is fine unless you're facing Koromo; by the time it runs out, your opponents will be barely alive anyway.

Being beaten to a win by an opponent is the scariest thing, so you'll want Intimidation at MAX so that you can break a fair number of abilities.
You have to win once first or it means nothing, so you'll also want to allocate some points to Haipai, Tsumo, and Luck.

Resistance is a matter of preference, but keep in mind that if your opponent has allocated to Resistance, your dangerous tile detection may be cancelled.

Ability Activation Timing Double Riichi: At the start of a round (activated at will)
Absolute Safe Zone: Always active (no activation effect)

Mechanics

She has two abilities: the always-active Absolute Safe Zone (forced 5-shanten) and Double Riichi, which can be activated at any timing.

The Absolute Safe Zone nullifies all other players' haipai adjustments and stacking-type abilities. (Reservation is also nullified.)
Other players can counter it by raising Resistance.

If you don't declare double riichi when the ability activates, you won't draw the tiles for the kantsu.
If you don't declare ankan when the ability activates, you can only very rarely draw the winning tile.

The kan ura dora does not apply unless you declare the ankan yourself.
(Even if you win by ron after another player declares kan, the dora does not apply.)
Occasionally you can end up winning by rinshan kaihou on the ankan, but the ura dora does not apply in this case either, so be careful.

This ability cancels out with Kasumi Ishito's Zetsu Ichimon.
Also, if an awakened Shizuno Takakamo is among the other players, the effect of the Absolute Safe Zone disappears.

The haipai at double riichi is 1 koutsu of a non-yakuhai wind, 1 toitsu (pair), and either 3 shuntsu or 2 shuntsu and 1 koutsu.
The winning tile is always one of the shuntsu tiles, with the wait being either ryanmen or kanchan at random. There is no penchan wait.

The winning tile is determined by the first tile you discard at double riichi.
- First discard is manzu → souzu
- First discard is souzu or an honor tile → pinzu
- First discard is pinzu → manzu

Senriyama Girls' High School

Tsumo ★★★
Haipai ★★★
Luck ★★★
Haipai Adjustment Honroutou, Ittsuu, Sanshoku
Ability Activation Timing Future Sight: At the start of a round (activated at will)
Winning tile detection: Always active (no activation effect)

Mechanics

When the ability is activated, she can see the tsumo tiles from 1 to 3 turns ahead,
and she can freely choose how many turns ahead to look.
The more turns ahead she looks, the more heavily Spirit is consumed.

Tsumo tiles seen with the ability are never shifted by calls.

Up to the 13th tsumo (excluding the first tsumo), she can reliably draw what she has seen.
From the 14th onward she can still see them, but the ability's effect ends, so she ends up drawing different tiles.

Haipai adjustments and tsumo adjustments are applied depending on the Ability value.
Also, maxing out Ability or Luck slightly decreases the number of times she can see.

Maximum when only Spirit is at MAX:
3 turns ahead: 5 times
2 turns ahead: 2 times
1 turn ahead: 1 time

Maximum when Ability, Spirit and Luck are all unallocated:
3 turns ahead: 2 times
2 turns ahead: 1 time

Maximum when Spirit and Luck are unallocated and Ability is MAX:
3 turns ahead: 2 times
1 turn ahead: 2 times

Maximum when only Spirit is unallocated and Ability and Luck are MAX:
3 turns ahead: 2 times
1 turn ahead: 1 time

Also, with some margin of error,
3 turns ahead x1 = 1 turn ahead x7
2 turns ahead x1 = 1 turn ahead x3
3 turns ahead x1 = 2 turns ahead x2 + 1 turn ahead x1
which are equivalent.
Each draw wears down Spirit by roughly 0.5 to 1 turn's worth.

Strategy

When using the ability, the influence of the Haipai and Tsumo values becomes smaller,
so training will split into two types: a Haipai/Tsumo type and an Ability/Spirit type.

(1) I'll keep seeing the future! Ability/Spirit type
If you want to see lots of the future, max out Ability and Spirit.
Allocating to Tsumo or Haipai has little effect, so leaving them unallocated is fine.
Max out Luck and Resistance too, to avoid having your dangerous tile detection cancelled.
Put everything that remains into Intimidation.
If your ability is broken, winning becomes difficult, so make use of dangerous tile detection to reach tenpai while not declaring riichi, and make sure you can fold safely.

    • Playstyle
With Spirit at MAX you can see 3 turns ahead up to 5 times, so unless there are fast East-round characters like Tacos, go all out with 3 turns ahead from the start and attack in one go.
Once you have pulled ahead on points to some extent, stop activating the ability and conserve Spirit. Don't declare riichi and focus on folding.
Until you are in a situation where you can definitely bust someone or be busted, it is better to keep it to 1-2 turns ahead even when you activate it.

(2) I'll carve out the future myself! Tsumo/Haipai type
If you don't care about future sight, max out Tsumo and Haipai.
You don't want your dangerous tile detection cancelled, so allocate as much as you can to Resistance and Luck too.
You'd like to put the rest into Intimidation, but because she is sickly, her Spirit is only ★2.
She is weak to draws and to Koromo, so you want to allocate to it to some extent.

(8) Junchan + Sanshoku + Iipeikou
(9) Chinitsu + Ittsuu
(10) Chinitsu + Ittsuu + Iipeikou
(11) Tsuuiisou

(1) and (7) are very common, and these two together account for about 50% of the total.
They are followed by (4) and (5), then (8), (9), and (10), then (2), (3), and (6).
As for (11) tsuuiisou, it is chosen very rarely, and in most cases the ability gets cut off at the haipai (described below).

Depending on the Ability value, the number of stacked tiles in the haipai and the average tenpai speed change.
Unallocated: 7-8 tiles, average tenpai speed: turn 7
MAX: 9-10 tiles, average tenpai speed: turn 13
The tsumo rate of the completing tiles simply goes up, so the riichi-ippatsu rate inevitably rises as well.
Also, rarely, even when the completed shape is visible, you may fail to win and the hand ends in a draw. (You will reach tenpai by the last turn at the latest.)

This ability is not affected by calls, and there are quite a few wasted draws.
While the ability is active, it is not affected by the base Haipai and Tsumo values.

Strategy

The differences from Eislinn, who has a similar ability, are:
1. It is not affected by calls
2. There are wasted draws
3. The number of stacked haipai tiles is large
4. Occasionally you can't win all the way to the end
5. It can be activated at will
and so on.

If you are going to use the ability, leaving Haipai and Tsumo unallocated is fine.
It is recommended to max Spirit for the number of possible activations.

Haipai Adjustment
Ability Activation Timing At the start of a round

Mechanics

As a hidden adjustment, when anyone (including herself) reaches tenpai, everyone but her is made to hold dangerous tiles (this very likely continues until the dangerous tiles run dry, similar to Sumire Hirose), and she is unlikely to draw dangerous tiles,
and so on.

She also has dangerous tile detection as a base adjustment, so she still senses dangerous tiles even if her ability is broken.

Strategy

When facing Cold Touka, you can't get anywhere unless you wear her down by tsumo or make her deal in, so go in with Intimidation, Resistance, and Luck at MAX.
If you make her dangerous tile detection get cancelled through Resistance, there is a chance she will deal in.
Also, once she reaches tenpai she makes the other players hold dangerous tiles, so if you are aiming for Touka, you'll want to stay dama.

Also, if you break her ability with Saki or become able to call through Resistance, you can declare daiminkan and make her pay by the responsibility payment (pao) rule for rinshan kaihou.
Otherwise, make use of being made to hold dangerous tiles, win by ron off other players, and out-earn Touka.

Conversely, when other players reach tenpai you are made to hold dangerous tiles, so be careful with tsumogiri.

If you are playing as Cold Touka, with Resistance and Luck allocated to MAX you will almost never deal in except through responsibility payment.

Comments

  • I've written out the Haipai Adjustments for each character as far as I know them. I've barely researched them yet, so I'd be glad if you could keep adding to and correcting this. --- (2018/02/27 22:56:35)
