Kiyosumi High School

Kiyosumi High School

Senpo: Yuuki Kataoka

Voice Actor: Rie Kugimiya
A first-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, she plays Senpo in the team tournament.
She absolutely loves tacos, and gets energized by eating anything
with "tako" (octopus) in its name.
In mahjong, she runs out of steam in the second half (South round).

Ability: Likely to become the starting dealer (chiicha)
More likely to draw useful tiles in the East round

Match-Only Voice Lines

“Tacos are sooo good~”
“I ran out of taco power, jee~” ...Ability misfire / duration expired
“I wonder if this will go through” ...Deal-in voice
“It's here, jee!” ...The moment a winning tile arrives
“Dealer riichi, here I go, jee!” ...Riichi as dealer
“If it passes! Riichi!” ...Chasing riichi
“I'm getting into form, jee!”
“Boom! Tsumo!” ...Tsumo (ippatsu?)
“It's double riichi, jee!” ...Double riichi
“This match will never see East 2!”

Mechanics

The ability is guaranteed to last up to 3 rounds.
Each win extends the ability by one round (if you don't win, the effect ends even in the East round).
With Spirit at MAX, it can continue for up to about 16 rounds.
The ability is forcibly cut off once the South round begins.
While the ability is active, the base Tsumo and Haipai values have no effect.

Even if it gets broken by intimidation when activating in East 1, there is another chance to activate in the next round.

While the ability is active, the rate of drawing useful tiles rises dramatically, so once you reach tenpai, even kanchan, penchan, and tanki waits have a very high rate of riichi-ippatsu-tsumo.

The number of stacked tiles in the haipai changes with the Ability value; the Tsumo rate and starting-dealer rate show no particular change.
At most, 3 shuntsu (9 tiles) are stacked.
The stacking pattern very often splits into two cases: three chanta-type shuntsu (123, 789) or three tanyao-type shuntsu (2-8) (there are exceptions).
And many are likely to be stacked in iipeikou or sanshoku shapes.
Examples of chanta stacking: 112233-789, 123-123-789, 789-789-789, etc.

With no points allocated, haipai is often 4-5 shanten, but the high rate of drawing useful tiles makes tenpai speed very fast.

The seat probabilities (East to North) in East 1 are roughly as follows:
East (starting dealer): approx. 50%
South: approx. 25%
West: approx. 15%
North: approx. 10%

Jiho: Mako Someya

Voice Actor: Ryoko Shiraishi
A second-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, she plays Jiho in the team tournament.
At her family's cafe, many customers play mahjong, and she has stored up
a vast number of those match scenes as mental images.
When she takes off her glasses, it is the sign that she is serious.

Ability: After a certain number of honba have passed, she can sense dangerous tiles

Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Sanshoku Doujun, Sanankou, Sangenpai
Ability Activation Timing At the start of a round (activated at will)

Special Cut-In Conditions

5 = Tsumo with a souzu flush

Match-Only Voice Lines

“I've seen a similar scene before” ...When sensing a dangerous tile while the ability is active
“There's no way to read this”
“Tsumo!!”

Mechanics

The ability can be activated from the 3rd round.
When the ability is activated, toitsu of honor tiles are stacked into the haipai and souzu tiles become more numerous.

Spirit MAX
Can be activated up to about 28 times

Basic stacking patterns
(1) 2 honor-tile toitsu + 3 souzu + random
(2) 1 honor-tile kantsu + 3 souzu + random
(3) 3 honor-tile toitsu + 3 souzu + random
(4) 9 souzu + random
The probability of each occurring decreases from top to bottom.

The number of stacked souzu increases as the Ability value rises.
At MAX: (1) and (2) have 5-7, (3) has 5, (4) has 10-11?

Chuken: Hisa Takei

Voice Actor: Shizuka Ito
A third-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club.
She plays Chuken in the team tournament.
A talented young woman who is both the mahjong club president and the student council president.
In mahjong, she prefers a playing style that deliberately ignores theory,
bewildering opponents with tactics ordinary people can't understand and bad waits.

Ability: The fewer winning tiles remain, the easier it is to draw a winning tile

Initial Stats Ability ★★★★
Spirit ★★★
Tsumo ★★★
Haipai ★★★
Luck ★★★
Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Ittsuu, Sanankou
Ability Activation Timing When a discard locks in tenpai

Special Cut-In Conditions

5 = Riichi when the ability activates / 6 = Tsumo after the ability activates

Match-Only Voice Lines

“Alright, let's go!”
“Now, I'll show you how serious I am”
“Riichi!”
“Tsumo!”
“I wonder if I'm finally getting into form”

Mechanics

The number of remaining winning tiles at which the ability can activate depends on how far the Ability has been trained.
  • Under ★5: 3 tiles or fewer
  • ★5 or above: 4 tiles or fewer
  • MAX: 5 tiles or fewer

Strategy

Other characters whose draws get stronger once they reach tenpai are Touka Ryuumonbuchi and Kurumi Shikakura, but
she differs from Touka in having no han restriction and in being able to activate the ability even after calling,
and differs from Kurumi in being able to activate the ability even after declaring riichi.
Compared with these characters, her strength is being free to choose between playing menzen or calling, so
you'll want to adapt flexibly to your hand.

Fukusho: Nodoka Haramura

Voice Actor: Ami Koshimizu
She plays Fukusho for the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club.
A player to watch, with a record of winning the individual title at the Inter-Middle.
Also competing in this tournament, Shizuno Takakamo of the Achiga Girls' Academy Mahjong Club and
Ako Atarashi and the others are her childhood friends, who
attended the same mahjong class when they were young.

Ability: After winning, you draw useful tiles more easily from the next round

Initial Stats Ability ★★★★★

Haipai Adjustment Iipeikou, Ittsuu, Sanankou, Sangenpai, Toitsu

Special Cut-In Conditions

5 = Pon / 6 = Chi / 7 = Kan / 8 = Riichi / 9 = Ron / 10 = Tsumo
* All while the ability is active

Match-Only Voice Lines

“Pleased to be playing with you” ...Opening greeting
“Saki-san…”
“Tsumo!”
“Excuse me”

Mechanics

When you win, the ability activates in the next round and you enter Nodocchi Mode.
Nodocchi Mode lasts for 2 rounds.
Winning while the ability is active extends Nodocchi Mode for another 2 rounds.

During Nodocchi Mode, many toitsu are stacked into the haipai and tsumo draws also gather as toitsu.
Hands usually come together as toitsu, but occasionally turn into ankou or kantsu.

Honor tiles in particular are likely to arrive as toitsu, so be careful when sorting out your honor tiles at the start.

Tsumo and Haipai values still have an effect during Nodocchi Mode.

Additionally, only Nodoka Haramura, regardless of whether her own ability is active, can see Momoko Touyoko's riichi and call cut-ins while Momoko's ability is active, and can call from Momoko or win by ron off her.

Taisho: Saki Miyanaga

Voice Actor: Kana Ueda
A first-year member of the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, she plays Taisho in the team tournament.
Normally a quiet girl who loves reading, but once she picks up mahjong tiles,
she overwhelms the others with her specialty, rinshan kaihou,
revealing a bold side of her personality.
To be reunited with her older sister, the top player in high school mahjong,
she aims to win the Inter-High with her teammates.

Ability: When she declares kan, she can draw a useful tile from the rinshan tiles
However, if another player declares kan, it is disabled for that honba

Initial Stats Ability ★★★★★
Spirit ★★★
Tsumo ★★★
Haipai ★★★
Luck ★★★
Tsumo Adjustment Kantsu, Koutsu
Haipai Adjustment Kantsu, Koutsu, Toitsu
Ability Activation Timing When declaring kan

Special Cut-In Conditions

5 = Consecutive kans via ability activation / 6 = Tsumo by rinshan kaihou

Match-Only Voice Lines

“Only tiles I don't need keep coming…” ...When drawing unneeded tiles consecutively
“One more, kan!” ...On consecutive kans
“Let's have fun together!”
“Mahjong is fun, isn't it?”
“Tsumo!”

Mechanics

At haipai, a [kantsu or koutsu or toitsu] of [1, 2, 8, 9 number tiles or wind tiles] is stacked.
If a toitsu or koutsu was stacked, declaring kan lets you draw that tile.
Training Haipai makes stacking reliable, with the breakdown as follows:
  • Untrained: 1 kantsu
  • ★5 or above: 1 kantsu, 1 toitsu
  • ★7.5 or above: 1 kantsu, 1 koutsu
  • MAX: 2 kantsu
It's not that points are wasted unless you allocate exactly to these thresholds;
the probability of the higher-tier stacking occurring rises gradually with points.
Also, occasionally 1 kantsu and 2 koutsu are stacked.

If you declare kan in a situation that doesn't match the above,
you can draw a tile you have already ponned, in addition to useful tiles. (You can't draw it if another player holds it.)

Strategy

Declaring kan while holding outer tiles tends to produce poor-shape waits, so
ideally declare kan while holding only 3-7 number tiles and honor tiles.
Also, getting beaten to a win by another player after declaring kan hurts, so be careful with your kan timing.

You'll want to train Haipai to MAX.
By declaring kan on the 2 kantsu and drawing useful tiles, you create at least 1 taatsu, so for Saki, 2-shanten is practically the same as tenpai.
However, kanning consecutively right away carries too much risk if another player gets the jump on you, so
hold off on kan until you're in a situation where you can reliably get rinshan kaihou or at least get to riichi.

Also, by declaring kan on the number-tile kantsu before the wind-tile kantsu,
you can avoid the rinshan tile attaching to the number-tile kantsu and being wasted, so keep this in mind.

Depending on the haipai, tanyao, chanta-type hands, and flushes are all hard to aim for, and it is hard to raise the value of your hand.
You can aim for sanankou, sankantsu, and sometimes suuankou, but it is also hard to keep gathering koutsu.
Therefore, your firepower will rely mainly on kan dora and kan ura.

Allocating points to Ability doesn't change which tiles you can draw, so there's probably no need to.

Comments

  • I've written out the Haipai Adjustments for each character as far as I know them. I've barely researched them yet, so I'd be glad if you could keep adding to and correcting this. --- (2018/02/27 22:56:35)
